Series of screenings from the Teatro Real Archive including major opera productions, concerts, dance shows, and theater, both classical and modern, to be enjoyed on the big screen.

Program:

Otello, lyric drama in four acts, first performed at La Scala in Milan on February 5, 1887, with music by Giuseppe Verdi (b. 1813; d. 1901) and libretto by Arrigo Boito, based on Shakespeare’s Othello, The Moor of Venice (1603).

This 2016 production, with stage design by David Alden, takes us to a Cypriot courtyard while it plunges us into a brutal, militarized world of dehumanized soldiers in a war that prevents them from responding to love or tenderness. Against this backdrop, Otello presents us with one of the most unconfessable fears of human beings: Not feeling worthy of the one we love most. With musical direction by Renato Palumbo, the leading roles are performed by soprano Ermonela Jaho, tenor Gregory Kunde, and baritone George Petean.

Duration: approx. 165 min.
